The July birthstone is a pink to blood red colored gemstone. Ruby is from the family of Corundum, as is Sapphire, but red corundum is called ruby and never red sapphire. Historically, ruby has been used as the July and December birthstone. One tradition was to give a ruby when a daughter was born. Ruby was popular in many myths and legends as well. The red gem was thought to have an inner fire and would reward the wearer with health, wisdom, and success in affairs of the heart. To this day, ruby has a strong relationship with love.
